Detecting a new permission for the first time in southern Minnesota that was the location to some of the oldest homesites in the area. I found my first box plate or a least half of it. I need to find the rest. Were these only used during the civil war? I also found a 1867 shield nickel in really good shape but I unfortunately gouged it because it was in the still frozen frost layer and I was hacking at it. Too bad a blizzard is on the way.

Great finds! How deep was the plate and what did it ring up as?

That shield nickel is in great shape.

It was pretty deep. I know it was deeper than the shot gun shells and other junk I had been finding. I don't remember what it rang up, I wasn't expecting it to be anything good

That's one of the better shield nickels I've seen come out of the ground, congrats. Good luck finding the second half of your box plate.

yeah have dug like a good 6 or so shields by now. None have been in that great of shape. Awesome save. oh yeah that box plate is great too.

Nice finds. Congrats!

The other parts are probably there. I found 1/8 of one the other day. Rest was not there.
