Hi Guys, found this today, struggling to nail the exact ID. Found in Herefordshire England.

Any help appreciated.

My best guess was king John? But unsure

I was going to say Henry III coin.

I agree. These series of Short-Cross can be tricky & its only small stylistic portrait differences & the Mint & Moneyer Combo that split the differences.

This one I am struggling with a bit, as the placement of the Initial Cross is not visible at the start of the moneyers name - [+?]ROBERT ON ???? Also the mint is hard to work out, maybe we have some doubling going on? My best guess is Canterbury.

PS. Changing to Henry III, but only 80% confidence.

You could well be right, as I said I'm unsure. Thanks for replying though [emoji106]

Well Henry III coins have the 4 dots, as well as cross on the back. Where as the others John, and Edward have 3

I looked for ages to match the portrait but I always struggle with the words even if they're clear...it's an IQ thing [emoji53]

I think you could be right, as John had the moneyer Roberd, not Robert like Henry III. It might be a type 7c?? SPINK 1356C

Haha. That’s what binge watching Time Team does. Since I live in Arkansas in the US, I have no idea of those coins, I only see them on TV;) I have owned several older Roman coins but they weren’t anywhere as nice as that one

Thank you both for your input, it's much appreciated

Thanks for sharing, I’m jealous since I’m in an area where coinage like that isn’t available.

Yeah we're lucky. I wouldn't mind being a hammered coin behind Crusader that's for sure! His finds are epic .

Yeah, Crusader has a line of finds that far exceed anything that anyone could find in my state. My only banner find was a item several thousand years older than what he finds.

I checked out your banner find, what a lovely piece of local history. Very nice indeed [emoji106]

Thank you very much. It’s a nice piece. A lot of historical value, for our area, and the members of Mercy

I do enjoy hearing of these, even if I'm likely never going to find one. Fascinating, as Mr. Spock would say.
