maybe. Maybe not? I found it in a new spot, so far I haven't found another stone like it there. I'm still not sure I would recognise "pecking" and "polish", :help: I know the small uniform holes are natural, and the corner has broken off, but what about the smoothness and the "pecking?" on the centers of both sides and fat end? To me, the edges look eroded naturaly, but were they shaped that way by hand first? I've found a broken point and flakes nearby also. Can someone help, please?

thanks for looking!

I am not sure about a hammer stone it look's like they might have used it for one . it also look's like they maybe used it for mano a some time.

Jmo, But I do think its a hammerstone. It looks like it has damage to it similar to what you would see on the poll end of an axe. It also looks like it has a small dimple in on side with some peck marks around it... If it was found near any points or tools, I would almost bet on it... John

flintdigger- it looks like it was used for grinding, but I opted to calling it hammerstone because of the holes in the centers. :dontknow: I really don't know-thanks for you opinion.

FLintfinder-it seems like most of the hammer stones are more round, but I did find some that were similar(online) to this one in shape. It's frustrating to not be able to say yes one way or the other. I'm hoping it is, so Thank you for your opinion too :icon_thumleft:

Naturegirl, I find all different shapes and sizes of hammer stones on campsites...So they really don't have to be round.... John :icon_thumleft:

I agree it can be frustrating not knowing for sure what the use of a certain tool or artifact was, it is sad that there isn't anyone around anymore that used these tools to tell us what their actual use was. But it is still a very neat artifact

Most certainly a hammerstone I would say. And yes they can be all different shapes, most hammerstones i find are oblong like yours.

Woo-hoo~! no one said "rock" Thanks guys!

Most def a mano, and maybe hammer/pecking stone? the small holes used as a 3rd use???? nice multi tool!
