Hello all! I am new to the site and wanted to ask for your opinions on on what I found. I found this in a creek on a friend's family farm in central North Carolina. It looks like a type of hand axe to me. It fits into your hand very nicely too, like it has been smoothed by the palm and fingers areas. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Here are some pictures of what I found. Thanks!!!

Hello friend and welcome. I'd say you have a core there -- a mother stone whereby smaller pieces were struck from and used to create stone tools and weapons.

Looks like a "core", where usable Flakes are removed from.
The "cortex" remaining, tells me that.
No sign of use/wear on edges.
A wannabe artifact....!
Good find, however....! :icon_thumright:

Thank you so far! This was found in central North Carolina.

It's been used by people. It's a very nice one. I would also say its a core.

Looks like a very good grade of North Carolina rhyolite. I'm surprised they didn't go further with it...

Seems like you would keep that around as a multi purpose tool, knock some fresh blades off when you needed them, and get everything you could out of that good stuff.

I might prop the back door open with it!

Agreed its core material. A good indication for the area.
