Since I'm trying to stay tick-free, I stayed in the grass areas at the farm today. Guess what? I still had a tick on me after only 30 minutes, even after spraying my boots & pants with deet! Lousy $%#@$%. >:(
Ridley and I have hit the grass areas pretty good in the past, so it is getting tougher now to find much besides old farm iron and tin foil. After about 2 hours I did find a few things, the best being an old button. Here's my digs for today:
*A brass button (plain front) with a backmark that says "Lewis & Tomes - Extra Rich".
Any ideas of the age on this one?
*A toy plane missing it's wings. 1940's possibly?
*A copper leaf.
*Small broken ceramic teapot. It was in the same hole as the leaf.
*Three Wheats: 1920 , 1926 , 1944.
*A 1947 Raleigh, NC. vaccination tag. My oldest tag so far.
*Asst'd other junk metal pieces.
That's all folks.
Thanks for looking,
MM

I think about 160 acres left to search. All woods though, so I'm waiting till winter. If the ticks get me in the winter, I'm giving up! ;)

LEWIS & TOMES 1820-1832 ;) Sweet. And the "extra rich" means extra sexy!

Nice button Doug... and nice other stuff too... I like the plane as well, you know the wings are out there someplace!

Oh I just love that leaf....its beautiful. You had some very nice finds today.
As for those tick....I am up here in tick country and you guys might not like this....but it works.....Take a pair of pantyhose and wear them .....or tights.......before you put them on spray them with deet or whatever you use.......but you wont get ticks on you or in delicate places.....even those lousy little deer ticks....I wear them in the woods under the camos and never get a tick on my lower body ........I spray a bandana with deet for around my neck and wear a hat in the woods.....Take those terrycloth sweat bands and spray and put one around each wrist ....... :).....then I suppose you better pray if you are a man that you dont get in an accident for on the way home.....but the ticks wont burrow in through the nylons.......

Thanks Jim. That may be my oldest button so far then. Ya-hoo!
It's funny you mentioned the plane wings. Ridley actually found the wings on one of our previous hunts. Not sure if he kept them though?
Thanks on the button ID.

Thanks Gypsy. I can see me asking my wife for her nylons now. :o
Actually, picturing myself dressed up like that was a real turn on. I may also put a pair over my head too. I just hope I remember to take them off before I walk into a store. ;D
Seriously though, thanks for the tips.

Nice lil' batch of finds there Miner....

...and I hope that every guy on this forum tries the panty hose trick!!

Still a worthwhile hunt. The 1947 tag alone would have been worth it. Of coarse it's easy for me to say sitting in my tick free chair. ;D

We got snow flying and about an inch or two on the ground. After hunting in shorts on Monday I don't feel like going back out hunting in full winter gear. :P

Very nice finds!

I got a tick on me for the very first time just the other day, in fact it was the day I found my first silver quarter. It freaked me a little, you know that itchy, bugs are on you feeling.

I use a couple of products that have worked very well for me in the past, unfortunately on that day I wasn't using anything, as I thought it was too cold and the ticks weren't out and about yet, Doh!

In any case the products I've used with good success are Ultrathon 33% Deet - Which I know at one time was a military issued product. More recently I have been using Jungle Juice 100% Deet. Both can easily be purchased at REI stores.

A real interesting site for bug sprays, medical supplies, emergency drinking water purifiers can be found here ====> http://www.travmed.com

They carry a product called Permethrin, that is actually used to treat your clothing to give you full and total protection. It is effective even after a couple of washes. If you really have concerns about the ticks you could try a bottle of the Permethrin clothes treatment in addition to a good repellant for your exposed skin.

Per the manufacturer:

Permethrin Clothing Treatment
The advantage of permethrin solution is its long duration of protection. One application (impregnation) lasts a minimum of 4 weeks and through 6 washings.

Each application kit contains 2 bottles of permethrin solution, two treatment bags, waterproof gloves, and instructions. One kit is sufficient to treat a set of garments consisting of a shirt, trousers, plus a pair of socks.

Permethin repels and kills mosquitoes and ticks that may carry malaria, West Nile virus, Lyme disease and other insect-transmitted diseases.
For use on clothing and mosquito nets.
Can be used on children's clothing.
Odorless and non-staining.

Just some thoughts good luck and Happy Hunting all!!!!

I agree MM, you in pantyhose is doin' it for me too.....LOL. Make sure you get the WASHED panty hose before wearing them over your head. Is that a plane? or one of those tootsie or manoil future cars? FYI, The bug stuff the military uses will repel anything, even your wife. So use it carefully ( they don't have all those FDA types to worry about when they make it. Great day. Bongo

Beat by the man in black.LOL good advice JR.

Johnny,
Great info. Thank you. Between those ideas & the nylons Gypsy suggested, I should be good to go.
HH,

Check this item out from travmed.

On the plus side it will certainly save you from the bugs.
On the down side it will probably get you shot as a bank robber.

Nice finds still.

I consider one flat button a decent outing over a few hrs. I've had days like you describe. We all do.
