We are in the middle of a heat wave & we have had close to no rain in weeks. Some of the Barley has started to be harvested & we are not far behind them, as the straw has yet to be bailed. I have not been detecting since we ran out of Bird Cover, but have been focusing on fishing that has been slow due to lack of rain/flow in the river.
Our Plan A was to do a sandy field because it would not be as bad as the dried heavy clay but it hadn't been done, very odd as this farmer is normally first in. Therefore Plan B was heavy clay & an area that hadn't produced much but a nice rare Galba Denarius;
We started on the field next door to the Galba Field, where we had only had 4 scrappies, but I thought a large area grid might throw up more. It didn't & after 2 hours all we/I had was a 16-17th C Crotal Bell (Never been more pleased to see a complete bell!), Lead Bullet, & button(Cru'dad).
After lunch we spent 1 hour on the Galba Field, with nothing, so we pulled up stumps & moved.
Plan C was a field that was on my mind but the only find was a Celtic Gold:
The conditions since we last did it, couldn't be more different. Today boiling hot, last time snow & frozen ground. I only lasted 30 mins before giving up, Cru'dad got an 18th C Spur bit & that was it.
Too hot for me.
At least we crossed off 3 more fields, time to move on & improve from our worst result this year;

That is a lovely bell, at least.

Been there after a drought. Bloody ground so hard folks were using a adz/pickaxe to dig.
Nothing is worse than stomping down on the spade/shovel, but it doesn't go in at all.

Wasn't that bad, and you could at least use the big cracks to get your spade in.

nice fancy on the crotal bell, the spunback button is cool too no cracking, nice work. Yes its not fun getting sunbaked under a cloudless sky all day believe me I know but those relics need harvesting ;)

just curious what temps you're dealing with? It's horrible here where I live. We've had a couple of weeks of temperatures over 100 degrees F. Couple of days ago it got up to 106F.

Beautiful crotal bell! Congrats!

Nice to hear from you Cru'. Were you magnet fishing? :). It had to be hot if you called it a day....I think your lack of finds is a sign that you are saving the best for last....or your next outing...

About 27 Degrees C.
The Recorded Record in the UK is only 38.7 in 2019.
We may get close to that later this week.

For me, I have very little heat in my house in the Winter. My body is like a radiator, part of my hyper-activity/over active thyroid (maybe, never been tested). It makes me a quick digger & a successful Detectorist but anything over 25 & it saps my energy (something I'm never normally short of).

These dry lumps mixed with stubble are more than difficult to squeeze some signals out. I tried but stopped after an hour or so. This week should be hot again and we need rain... Next day out will be better Cru!

Hello friend, I am Hispan but with a new account, I am glad to see that you are still active giving strong.... ;)

Welcome back.
Started the year strong with 5 Celtic Gold, & then one of my best finds ever - Roman Gold. But the harvest & this heat wave have stalled our progress - just can't dig at all in some fields!.
