We had one from my families hometown called the "Coggon Monitor", same, same, same, I used to visit every weekend (from the city) and was always in the paper, a lot of notoriety for a five year old. Those old folks whose kids had moved to the city sure did enjoy having young company, just couldn't visit without eating.
Was there a few years ago, not much changed, maybe a little sadder as the kids move farther and farther away and visit less.
I had a chance to read some of the obits for the local guys that died in WWII, talk about some compassionate and heartfelt good byes. Just make you cry to read them. Those small town papers had a need and a respect for good writing and their citizens. Even if the daily updates were sometimes pretty formula.
Seems like journalism has denegrated into a concentrated boil spewing yellow sensationalism.
Pretty sure I was in Holstein quite awhile back, 40 or 50 years, Granddad bought a mean ass bull around there, as I remember the town it was like universal (my own) small town IA, everybody's mostly friends, and people don't screw up because they know it's wrong, not out of fear of getting caught.
A good time was had by all, jim
