Can anyone give me some information about this? I have been told that it was a commemorative hatchet head made by H.B. Colt. It says 1740 H.B. Colt on it. It has two different heads on it. It is made of iron.

First, welcome to T Net. 2nd, I'm not an expert by any means, but my suggestion might take you in a different direction with your research. I read it before reading your description, and
initially I didn't come up with colt. I read HBCo LT ---- HBC stands for "Hudson Bay Company." H B Co, same thing. I'm thinking it stands for "Hudson Bay Company, Limited."
That said, I don't even know if the term "Limited" was even used in 1740. But the capital letters, HBC, the little o and the capital LT are curious enough to me that I'd do a little research
in that direction.

Agree it's Hudson Bay Co. And also that it is commemorative rather than period authentic. Apparently there were variations.

Pretty cool find - it appears rare even if newer!

Commemorating a group formed in 1740, that is what I think, as said above, it is newer.

I am not sure. We have been told by some that it was one of a kind. Still trying to research it.
