Pre WWII, some states, Wisconsin for one, required gas stations to post the gasoline gravity. I believe the gravity is the specific gravity which has to do with the how much lighter than water the gasoline is. "Heavy" gasoline would get you more miles per gallon, but would not works as well with carburetors as well as light gasoline, especially in colder weather. I figure this has to do with how well refined it was, or perhaps what was added to it.
