Just curious if anyone would like to share their experience with getting coins graded? I have a coin that I would like to get graded but have never done it before. Did you use a LCS and have them send it out? Did you become a member with one of the grading services and send it yourself? Did your coins come back at the grade you thought they would?

Like I said, I doubt your coin will grade problem free. For a relatively "common" key date like the 1909-S VDB, it is well known enough that the market is pretty wide open. If I were you, I would go to a major coin show and submit it in person for ANACS economy service. I don't think spending the extra money to go with PCGS is worth it in your case.

OR

Just do something like this:
1909 s VDB Lincoln Head Wheat Cent Key Date | eBay

Why wouldn't it be worth it to go with "the best" grading service? My investment is one cent at this point. Lol.

Simple. If the coin comes back anything other than problem free, you just killed the value of your coin AND wasted money having it slabbed.

Get a few other opinions (in person) and if you are confident it will grade problem free, then by all means have it slabbed. I hope I'm wrong...

Ponder this....if I have it graded and it turns out to be a lower grade, why couldn't I remove it from the slab and sell it as is for potentially more than i could get in that grade? I would be out only the cost of grading, and because of my low inital investment i would recoup the cost easily. BUT if it comes back a high or decent grade I would be able to sell it for more than I would in "raw" form. Basically a gamble with the ante being the cost of grading. Next question, would a coin graded by PCGS command a better price than an ANACS or NGC graded coin relative to the cost of grading?

Must be something about the Evergreen State. I found an 1909 S VDB from a bag of cents last year. I sent it to PCGS and it came back VF35.

The choice is yours about which company to use. Although I have no intentions of selling it in the near future, I chose PCGS because right now they are perceived as being the most conservative graders and their coins seem to command higher sight-unseen prices. That of course may change in the future, but I felt it was worth the 30.00 to go with them.

My thoughts exactly waseeker. Did you send it yourself or go through a dealer?

I sent it through a local dealer that I know and trust.

Is the dealer anywhere near seattle by chance? Maybe I could use the same one?

sorry he's some 180 miles south of Seattle in Vancouver

Gotcha. Thanks anyway!
