Banger,
I don't know much about the BHer QD II. The Garrett ACE 250 was my first machine and I really like it. It is great for coins and jewelry. I would have to say that it is super easy to learn and is water proof up to the unit control panel. It's light to carry and is easy on the batteries. The pinpointing is a little tricky at first but after you learn the sweet spot it's all about waiting for the right tone. Get ready to dig.

dragon6banger: Yes, the BH QDII is a good machine for the beginning detectorist. The coil and cable are waterproof, but the control box is not. That's pretty much true for all general purpose, land based detectors. If you have specific questions on the QDII, hop on over to the Bounty Hunter forum at http://www.detecting.com and ask all the questions you desire. There are quite a few on the BH forum who use the QDII with good results.

More important than the brand for any new detectorist is taking the time to really learn your machine and how it reacts in specific hunting situations. Building a good test garden and using it to learn your detector is a great way to start. Work on building a good swinging technique and learn proper target recovery. There are many simple tips on this forum and others that will breed early success more than the brand of detector you swing. Hope you have great success in this addictive, obsessive-compulsive hobby!
