I recently moved to the Baltimore area and I'm so excited to start venturing out there and finding amazing relics! I wanted to break my detector out this weekend but my wife had a nice "honey-do" list for me. I'm going to start off in my own back yard and move on to knocking on people's doors and asking permission. Anyone else looking to do so? I'm honestly not huge into going to public places. I'm in this for the hunt! I understand that Maryland laws are "fun" to deal with, and that's why I want to do it on private land with the right contract and courtesy for the landowners.

Hello and welcome to the forum...

Welcome to the forum from another from Baltimore.

Thanks guys! I went on my first hunt today in my own backyard! I did about half of it and found a bunch of nails, a 1951 wheat and a tarnished 1961 Nickel. Not much but I had a blast!
Maryland has a bunch of laws that I've been reading up on. It seems that my best bet is to hit up the private properties! (With permission of course!)

welcome I'm from the area as well. I feel the same about hunting, I prefer getting permission from private land owners over public areas around here.

Welcome to TNet. I used to dig a lot of privies in Baltimore for old bottles, and can tell that in many of the pre 1900 row home back yards the accumulated soil and debris can be a couple feet deep. This means that most of the early coins etc. will be well below the reach of a metal detector, especially since there will probably be a lot of iron and other trash in the yards masking the good targets. If you live in a pre 1900 row home, and feel up to it, I would suggest digging the privy(s), and removing, or sifting through the top foot of soil in the back yard, if you want to see what all is really hiding below ground. Good luck and HH.

Thanks redbeard! I live in a single family between Relay and the Marc station over in Halethorpe so I'm very hopeful in great finds!
