Welcome to Tnet.

Good button.

Maltby & Richardson were linen and woollen drapers in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. I’m not sure of the dates they operated between, but they have a listing in the 1855 Post Office directory, with the address given as “Market Place”.

A little more…

The partnership between the two guys listed in 1855 seems not to have existed in 1864. The Mansfield directory for that year lists them separately: John Richardson & Company, draper at Market Place, Mansfield; William Maltby, draper at Westgate, Mansfield.

by how it's constructed I'd say G 1785-1800,

No. it's not going to be that early. Terms for the quality of plating such as "Treble Gilt Colour Standard" first appeared on British buttons in the first quarter of the 19th Century and were widely used through to about 1860-ish.

That would also be consistent with the company being listed in the 1855 Post Office directory but not in the 1864 Mansfield directory.
