I'm glad I found this forum. It seems pretty active!

I recently did one of the tourist traps where they give you a bag of sand with an abundant number of minerals mixed in, and you get to sort it out. It was cool getting some unique minerals, but I want to do it for real! I mainly plan to pan for gold, although I'm also interested in getting some magnetite. Obviously, I'm not going to get much of anything, but it's the fun that counts!

I respect your desire for privacy. However, knowing what state you are in will result in you receiving much better help. Looking for gold in Colorado is quite a different proposition than looking in Michigan or Texas.
