I have recently joined the Air National Guard and will be up at Fort Meade, Maryland for 4 months for training. I will have weekends off so I am DEFINETLY going to be packing my detector. I don't know much about the area at all, but to hunt some colonial area, it would be an absolute dream come true! It will be a LONG 4 months away from my wife and kid over the holiday/winter months, so I am banking on some help to kill the time!

Would anyone be willing to help me out and either point me in the right direction or let me tag along with you somewhere to get to some places to swing near Fort Meade? Soldiers have some off-base travel restrictions, which means staying within 20 miles/1 hour of base radius. We can exceed that with permission, but I am not sure how often or how easy it will be to get that special permission.

ANY INFO WOULD BE WONDERFUL! THANKS!

Welcome to the forum from White Plains, New York! :occasion14:

haha thanks man! I have been meaning to jump on here but now that I am facing some new potential territory to hunt, I figured its about time!

I would be hunting Fort Meade itself. The garrison opened in 1917. This will probably be your only oppurtunity. I would go to the post library and try to get a look at any old maps of the installation. Maybe location of old barracks, drill sites, etc. I am retired Air Force and have hunted on a few military installations and have never been hassled about it. Remember most folks will never get access to a place like that! The woods behind Burger King looks promising. (I looked on Google Earth.) Good luck and if I lived near there I would go with you.

Welcome to the forum. I'm in Cecil Co MD. Elkton area and have some permissions where I can take someone. Don't know if that is too far for you or not. This fall I will have some pretty good fields open up.

Yeah this is going to be my fall back. I'm completely sure I will have plenty of time to dig around on base, and I would have no complaints if that all I get to work with, BUT my life goal is some colonial era finds. I have a lot of family military history in the Revolutionary War and would love to take a piece home with me as good luck charm for my military career! I have also look at the woodland around the base. I wont have a car so I think a morning hike into the woods will be a very popular area for me. haha

and thank you for your years in the service SirMy family has very much enjoyed all you have help to protect

I will keep you in mind trapperart! I just googled it and it is far enough to need special permission, but to hunt a field would be EPIC! that is really what I am looking for. Something with high odds (the diggers dream right haha) just for the sake of my time in that part of the country/my time being able to get out and hunt is going to be limited. My next dilemma would be transportation to get 1.5 hours out... id prob have to rent a car or something haha

but once I get there I will have phone and computer access, I'm not sure on my dates yet, but no doubt it will be fall/winter this year.

If you find any streams or rivers anywhere around there, Id search around there. Those old timers always built their homes next to water, and you see tons of really old stuff here on T-net from guys hunting creeks and so forth.

I cant find it what you are referring to specifically, but the past few posts you had with the light fixture piece and buckle are AMAZING! I would die to have some 1700's in my bag! I mean... I'm open for whatever. I just want to get out there!

for sure! I also try older big trees! I was able to hunt down in MS on a work trip (my field rep is majored in history and MD's so we made sure to go do that while I was there visiting accounts), and I cant help but think there has to be an old Civil War soldiers weapon leaning on a tree in the ground! haha No luck yet, but I know one day the tactic will pay off!

Welcome to Tnet,
Yep, having access to a military base would be exciting for me.
Thanks for your service.

Go with Art if you can. The man hauls in some serious stuff!

Thats very generous Art. Cheers

I hope you find what you're looking for right on your base. Also getting together with TrapperArt would be a dream adventure. I'd be working on making that a reality. I am believing you are gonna' recover some cool stuff before you have to hit the road. Looking forward to some pictures of your finds.

Ft. Meade...? Within ONE hour...? That area is ALL developed with "Steel & Glass"! Is that ONE hour, one way... two way...?; within TWENTY miles...? WOW! All I can think of is EAST Maryland, outside of DC, where John W. Booth was, after he assassinated Prez. Abe Lincoln. It was COPPERHEAD country, with PRO-SOUTH "leanings" & KGC "involvement". HH! Good Luck!

As mentioned in original post a 20 mile or 1 hour RADIUS (so one way), and again that can be overwritten with permission but since i don't know how reliable permission to exceed that limit will be i need to plan for both possibilities of being able to get away decently far as well as be stuck within the 20 miles. I just don't know that area at ALL! You can bet your bottom dollar that i will be hunting around the base, because that will be easy access for me. But ideally I would kill to have a fellow detector give me some tips, or let me tag along in a near buy field or similar. I know its a lot to ask of people, so I am blown away at everyone responses as is! I am VERY grateful for them. Its just going to be a long time away from loved ones and I am would hate to sit on an ideal mind to let me get homesick.

I cant let this thread die... anyone else out there able to help me out?

I can't get up there as I am so busy here in Colorado. But I will tell you what I would do. I would buy a cheap bicycle since you don't have a car. Put the detector in a backpack. You can easily cycle 5 miles, I hope. Ask for some permissions. Explain you are military and it is a hobby where you collect old American coins. I bet you score some good permissions. Surely there are some old houses around Fort Meade.

....I don't know why I am so dumb... A BIKE WOULD BE PERFECT! haha even to get a bus stop to got a little further out! i mean I'm sure I would want to go a little further out a time or 2 but for the off days that would be so cool! Thanks man! Yeah, for the part of the country I'd be in, I could only imagine that there would be some older houses and such in the area, but google earth only does so much for me! haha
Thanks a million!
