I tap them gently with a hammer. The proper thing to do would be soak in olive oil for 6 months and then gently use a toothpick! good luck. looks silver if it was in the sea.

What type of metal is it made of?

Don't know what metal it is. It is reading foil on the detector, don't know if that is because of the crust. It's not a penny, same size as a quarter

I've found a few that look just like that. They end up in my scrap pile!

I found one that looked like that, but ended up being an 1886 Morgan Silver dollar. Mine was found in a lake. Clean it up carefully, who knows.

Electrolosys

Any luck?

I'd be tempted to carefully scrape an edge to at least determine the type of metal.

looks fairly toasted good luck with it ,try Electrolosys

I've found several similar "coins" in the past. They turned out to be melted aluminum foil, most likely left in a camp fire. Might be why your detector is indicating foil. Have you weighed it? That might give you some indication as to what it really is.
