Help ID this Bullet

My son found this Bullet at an old site hunting which is a cool find considering the territory of Utah is only 200 years old. Any help would be appreciate in telling me about it. There is an initial of ?DL. where the primer goes.. Cant read the first letter, but looks like a C. Thanks in Advance

C.D. Leet was a very early cartridges company that made many different calibers. Nice find! Slightly rare. Here's an example:

Yep...... several of the old ones were rimfire. Calipers are about the only good way to tell caliber etc. Bet some of the experts will nail it for ya soon. Congrats.

If you read your link the .50 1866 trapdoor used a .50 center fire cartridge.

It is definitely a Spencer .56 Rifle cartridge. The specific version y'all found with the CDL headstamp (base-marking) was manufactured only from 1864 through 1866. For confirmation of the time-dating, go to the following linked webpage and scroll down to the CDL headstamp.
