Help ID this small brass thing ????

[Southern Brass]

It's 1 inch long sorta oval shaped , brass with a greenish patina, about a 1/2 inch wide, 1/8 inch thick. It has a slot that is off set from the center. Nothing stamped on either side. There appears to be two tiny holes at each end. Could this have been an old kinfe guard? If it was it had a very small blade

If the holes are one on either end it is very likely an escutcheon for a rifle barrel key.

If my memory serves me, we have discussed several times about these brass pieces and decided it was saddle decor. Although yours might not be the same thing.
