Help identifying artist and location of oil painting! American or European?

I recently purchased this oil painting from a local yard sale. My art professor states that it is from approx 1870s. He believes that it may be European or American (Rocky Mtns, east coast area). It's an oil painting on board. It is NOT signed anywhere on the front that I can see but on the back is a name written in pencil Newman. Not sure if that is the name of the artist or a gallery. I've learned that early American artists did not sign their pieces. Any identifying information is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

My guess would be Alaska.... not East Coast or Europe IMO...Rockies? dunno
