It is a bottom for sure, can you post pictures of the front as well? Plenty of button experts here that will help you ID that. Congrats!!
 

Nice find and welcome to the forum. Yes looks like old button. I agree with Joe-Dirt, get photo of the front someone may be able to help with some info.

Thanks folks. The front is quite a bit more worn, but a few pictures added anyway.

The button was found on the Isle of Skye in Scotland.

figure that it is older than anything that we might have over here, maybe not
 

Yeap a circa 1820s type of Civilian flat button.

Yeap, it's a Quality Mark - ''GILT'' means it was once gold plated.
 

Ex-gold plated Button.

First half of 19th century, in all likelyhood from London.
