If you can shave off a bit with a file then see if it burns you'll know if it's coal.

Not sure either of the two identifications offered are native to the Gastonia area. Obsidian is more like glass and comes from a volcano.

Actually, I got it from a Korean lady. She said it was onyx, so she may have brought it from there. She knows I metal detect, and wanted me to have it.

I didn’t think it to be onyx. I’ll try and ask where she got it from and get back!!

Appears to be obsidian from the fractures, luster and colorization. As said its primarily been used to make stone tools but some material makes good jewelry.
