When you say "near river", does this mean on a river bank? Close to a river, or within X number of yards? How close?

What is the history of the region surrounding the water way? Any close bogs or swamp area? Or where bogs drained in the historic period?

What is the material?

How does the bottom of this item appear? How was it separated from the surrounding matrix is what I am looking for?

Found on small rock island in river close to one shore that was exposed due to drought conditions (adding picture of rocky area it was found).

Area is well know for Native American artifacts.

It's a natural stone, not slate, just a plain rock.

Adding pic of bottom of stone. It was face up laying around with other stones.

Your Rock...appears very similar to those shown in your picture... still being in the river.
My best surmise is the Native Indians dragged one to the shore...to clean fish on.

i believe this is an example of a Liesegang ring. These concentric circles can exist in igneous stone. While not as common as sedimentary, its not un-heard of.

In a magnified close up of the edge you can see the crest and trough of the in igneous rings.


Putting the obverse and reverse together in an image really does not yield any additional information, but faint lines can be seen in the reverse side. If you hold your head just right and squint.


I dont think water action could cause this, nor do I go with an above theory that native Americans used this to clean fish.
