Detector(s) used
Garrett 350
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
Could you please help me ID this coin.

It was found in a field metal detecting in Germany. It is approximately 23mm.

I know it's in rough shape and the pictures are the best I can do. To me, it looks like two large "E"s separated by a key on one side. And possibly a large shield on the reverse side.

Thank you for any info.

Try wetting it a tad to see if detail comes out better in picture?...just a thought

Cool find, no help here. Looks like an alien head in the second photo...lol. My curiosity is up on this.
What did it ring up as? (Copper, Nickle, etc.) May help one of the experts chime in.

The coins over here ring up all over the place.

It rang up a solid 67 on the AT Max.

So maybe copper??

Thanks. That's what I see on one side also. For some reason this app turns all my pictures counterclockwise from how I took them.

What websites do y'all use to help ID old coins? The only one I know of is Numista. I have searched through a lot of coins on Numista without result.

Thanks in advance!

Hang in there. Maybe Crusader or Westfront will see this. They identify lots of Roman stuff. Good luck.

Thanks for the photos! I've worked on this on and off since you first posted and I think I finally found it - a liard from the Netherlands mid 1600s. Here is some info:

De hagemunt van Gronsveld* Het voormalige graafschap Gronsveld is gelegen aan de rechteroever van de Maas in de gemeente Eijsden
Thank you very much for your hard work and dedication. I do not know how some of yall do what you do. Any reason why it wouldn't be on a site like Numista? Obviously I'm new at all this, but that is my main source of identifying my coins I find from detecting. I have never found that coin before and was excited when I found it and even more so when you Identified it for me.

I don't know why if it isn't listed on Numista... the duiten.nl site is very detailed though and covers some obscure issues.

It's funny that I looked at the duiten.nl site a couple days ago as your coin reminded me of the "F B" Liard coins of Ferdinand of Bavaria but then I talked myself out of it. Now I think your coin may be related to that style - perhaps imitating it.

And nice find! :icon_thumright:

The "F B" Liard coins of Ferdinand of Bavaria was the furthest I got with trying to ID it myself. Like I said, my "expertise" is limited to numista and Google. Haha There are so many amazing coin designs in this area. I love reading about them.

Try doing a light rubbing with paper and pencil. Often picks up undetected details.

Everything on numista is user added. So I guess no one on numista has this coin or bothered to add it to the catalog. Sometimes this happens and is more common the farther back and more obscure the coins are.
