Help IDing Colonial Find

I found this item yesterday at an old log cabin site built around 1780-1790. It measures 1 1/4" long and 3/4" wide. Made of brass or copper, and the reverse is plain with no markings. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I found one just like it last year, I think I was told it is a saddle ornament. I forget stuff two minutes after I learn it lol

I believe it's an escutcheon / medallion for a drawer pull or cabinet knob.
