I found this today in an old park. The same place where I have found a 1787 Connecticut Copper, US Civil War Belt Buckle, and a 1809 half cent. I have no idea what it was for. There was a thin metal piece covering the recess in the back. I did not see anywhere where it would have been attached to something.

I would think it is a woman's fashion buckle. But I wouldn't guess an age.

There was a fashion in the Victorian era that included the use figural busts in silverware and other metalwork. It was referred to as "medallion" decoration. It was common from 1860 until about 1885.

This piece looks to be from that period, and was probably a plaque that was an inset in a wooden box lid.
