Dug this about eight inches deep, in a field (northern SC). Could anyone take an educated guess as to what it could be. The back is nondecorative. The right side has the remnants of iron connected to it, but the left side is broken. ????? Any ideas?

Some kind of a broach?? Is there any evidence of a there having been a pin on the back at one time. That was a good idea to put the tape measure in there, if you look just at the item it seems much bigger.

Hi, I was looking at some antique furniture we have in the barn and this looks like part of a drawer pull. Old furnture pulls had ornate backings. Maybe you can tell from the right side if there was a loop for a handle. Just a guess.

Yea, I thought that too(drawer pull) but its flat, nowhere to get fingers under to pull unless that was the iron part that rusted away. No I think its a decoration off Gen. Lee's uniform, Yea thats what it is. HEHE!!!

It's just the backplate to the pull. The handle would have hung at the ends, and is now gone.

Rare Tasmanian Holiday Mask. They used to staple them to their noses and pretend no one could tell who they were. Most people just went along with it even though they saw right thru the disguise. They are quite common today because many furniture makers started using them for drawer pulls and it caught on.

I agree with the backplate of a drawer pull, the broken off areas look like it was repaired several times and possible finally gave up the ghost. Somewhere out there is a ghostly drawer pull looking for it's handle!
