Help need (serious topic for once) lol

Hi I was thinking about VLF detectors and the frequency's they operate on. I'm by trade a computer tech and am currently researching a way to hook up a metal detector to a PC this I feel would help in analysis of the data from the days searching enough for that for now that's my future project will post when I completed it. Back to the question in hand frequencys how are they set in a metal detector is it by a frequency clock or via another method I realise methods may vary so if possible could you be specific in model. Iam in particularly interested in the best frequency to use and also how to alter thanks
