help on 1800's carthridge

I found a shell casing that is from the late 1800's and need some help identifying it. I don't have a picture to post right now but its a 50. cal. shell casing 2 inches long. At 12 o'clock on the shell casing is the letter 'C' , at 3 o'clock is the number '82' , at the 6 o'clock position is the letter 'F' and at the 9 o'clock position is the number '9'.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve ;D

Sounds like a .45-70 from the Frankford Arsenal of 1882 vintage. The "C" designates a carbine (underloaded)cartridge. Similar to the one furthest to he right in the image below?

Yep, it looks like the one on the right. Is the number on the left the month it was manufactured?

Thanks for your help and the pictures. :icon_thumleft:

Yep. "9" would be Sept, 1882.

I concur. Length should be 2.10". Nice quick ID! Check mark. Monty

Monty,

I got out my digital calipers and it measured 2.10 inches. You are very correct and I bow to you wisdom. Looking forward to seeing you in 60 something days!!! :icon_thumleft:
That was one of the cartridges I found last year on our hunt in Caldwell.
