Help preserving a rock/stone Indian???

Hello folks. I need help preserving a rock / stone i found years ago. I believe it to be a idian relic. I put it on the mantle at my parents house a forgot all about it. Its not the tipical artifact, not sure what crack pipe this indian (if a indian at all) was smoking but the rock is different. It is Black and has all kinds of seem fractures in it its getting very briddle and i would like to preserve it. It seems like it has some type of iron in it. Anyclues on what to do? I will post a image of it as soon as i find my cam and charge the batteries.
