Looks like part of a civil war two piece belt buckle to me, if it was the other piece would have circled it and would have resemble a wreath.

I think it looks 19th C pressed copper/brass & is the tongue to a buckle. My gut thinks civilian in a Military style, but I await the experts.

Crusader's gut [feeling] is correct... those thin stamped-sheetbrass ones have turned out to be mid-1800s "patriotic civilian" buckles. Lots of them have been dug in California. Ask T-Net member BuckleBoy about them.

It was the thinnest that gave it away.
