Help!!! What the heck is it?

My buddy Chicepo and I found what we believe is an old homestead out in the woods near the NC coast. We have found some personal items and also some logging tools. This particular item was found near an axe head and some unidentifiable (logging?) tools. It is rather heavy and about 8" in length. Can anyone help identify it? Thanks in advance!

At least you found the whole assembly. I dug 2 pieces of just the blade section and thought I had found iron points. Good thing no one was around to see the happy dance.
