So here is my best find from yesterdays 1hr hunt.

This is button is a little smaller then a dime.

The reverse side reads "William Wallis" "No.1 Extra Fine"

Cant seem to find much info on this button other then Wallis produced buttons in England (I think) until 1828?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This one is after it had been soaking in soap and water, every once in a while Ill take it out and gently dab the water and some of the crud off with a soft towel.

Heres some updated pics of the front and back of this early 1800s Navy Officers Uniform Button I found this weekend in the yard at my apartment.

I have only soaked it in warm water with some dish washing soap and lightly dabbing with olive oil.

That's a great button! probably a cuff button going off the size of it. Check out this site. It should be of help. I do think that button probably pre dates the Civil War. Most likely War of 1812 time period. I am not expert though. It does not look like a flat button but that website should be a good starting point.

Ridgeway Civil War Archive Buttons from Federal Navy one part flat buttons.

The exact butting isnt on there, from what I have found online is that William Wallis' name isnt commonly found on buttons. He made buttons for another company and they typically put their company name on the back. So to find one with William Wallis' name is pretty rare from what I read over the weekend. Wallis apparently only made buttons from 1800-1828.

Thanks for the link and info.

Awesome!! I am a history teacher and I dream of finds like that to have as showpieces in my classroom. I teach US history from the start till the civil war. That is perfect!

I have been slowly cleaning the button with mineral oil and this is what it looks like now, still slowly working to get as much grime off as I can.
