Thanks. I think you are dead on with a beam clamp. Now I have to figure out whether or not such an item would have been used on a 19th century steamer. Does anyone here know if beam clamps were even used in 19th century? I think it's obvious that I'm trying real hard to make this item from the steamship. I kinda have a feeling it's gonna turn out to be a catfisherman's trot line weight. But what I don't know ain't gone hurt me!

Steam engines had pipes and they had to hang from something. Works for me !
