I don't know if anyone can give me any suggestions, but if they can, I'd appreciate it.

I set the machine to coin mode and threw a couple of coins on the ground. I them passed the detector over one of the coins and got a tone. I move the coil to the side, hit pinpoint, and moved the coil back. I got a solid tone and a full signal over about 18" of ground as I moved the coil towards me. I then noticed that I was over an old rusty pipe, following it with the coil.

So can I assume that when I hit pinpoint, I'm turning all discrimination off? The pipe didn't sound until I hit pinpoint, then it sounded constantly. In fact, that was a pretty constant theme of the day - hit pinpoint, even for a small piece of metal, and get a tone that covers about 12" square. i had the sensitivity at about 3-4 bars, and saw this in coin and jewelry mode.

Thanks.

One other question - I thought i saw some postings about where the "sweet spot" is on the coil on this machine, but i can't find the posts. Does anyone have a link or an answer?

Hi jk,

I just got a new Ace 250 last week.? Pinpoint mode is "all metal" - no discrimination and no motion.? I noticed that my pinpoint switch is a bit touchy, as someone else mentioned.? Sometimes it doesn't work with the first push.? And today, I experienced what you did with the pinpoint mode sometimes giving a tone over a large area.? But both times, there was a large target below.?

In one case, I was getting an occasional bell tone in various spots in an area about a foot square.? Going to pintpoint mode had the tone and indicator going full tilt over the whole square foot.? So I dug.? Guess what?? A one-foot square piece of rusty steel.? I'm glad I dug, because I would have had doubts about the machine....

The second time it happened, I dug a foot-long piece of rolled-up sheet metal of some sort.

When you mention "sweet spot" are you talking about where the target is under the coil after pin-pointing?? Mine seems to be just below the top of the inner coil... that would be the target location after you drag the coil slowly away from the target until the tone stops.

Experiment with this by carefully burying a coin and pinpointing it with your 250.

Good luck with your new MD.? I'm loving mine!

Good hunting,
desmobob

I have had bell tones ring where I knew I had a coin, but my pinpoint was huge. Apperantly something deeper. If you have that situation, what I do is raise my coil and just make an x. When you find a coin, the 250 will bang solid. I've dug enough iron and trash to where I only dig the screamers.

I tried this today and it worked like a charm.

The pinpointing center for my machine seems to be right under the stem by the way.

Thanks.

My pinpointing sweet spot is also just below the top of the inside coil.

I have found that the sweet spot is different on different coils or when you change coils. Since I can't remember what spot is on which coil I always use the X method to pinpoint a target. Sometimes I miss but most of the time I am dead on.
