I did a quick search. Who knew hippo cookie jars was a thing? :dontknow:

Lots of them on the internet but I didn't see any like yours. For what it's worth, the orange and brown together make me think '70's.

Not to everyone's tastes... and certainly not to mine. I'm sure Matt is correct that it's modern, bordering on vintage. This one is said to be 1960s, and is marked "Made in Italy 4963":

The seller bizarrely suggests you could use it as a soup tureen or a flower planter without the lid, but it would have been made as a biscuit (cookie in America) or 'sweetmeat' jar. Obviously, pieces marked in English (ie not marked "Italia") are for export and these are the kind of thing that were sold in the 'gift' sections of department stores. Pieces without any maker indication are much less desirable to china collectors, so it's worth whatever you can get for it.

Addition: Plug N Play found the same item while I was editing the pics.

It might have been an unglazed piece of pottery, that someone glazed in a pottery class. The pottery classes have unglazed pottery for projects so you can do your own. That could be why the unique glaze.

Possibly, but I doubt it would then have been signed "Italy". I'm pretty sure this is just commercial decorative (?) homeware mass-produced in an Italian factory.

So....., "Hungry, Hungry Hippo"? :)

I would say Mr Hippo came out of the same factory as this quirky little vase (or maybe it's also a storage container missing its lid), picked up by someone at a market for £1. The letter styling of 'Italy' is almost identical. Not much chance of attributing it without any other marks, but for sure it won't be from anyone prestigious.
