Hi All,

Just joined this site as I haven't found any other forums that deal with native american artifacts.

I found these over the summer in a dry creek bed in Colusa, CA which is a known area that farmers will find grinding rocks etc.

I have a few indian artifacts books but none of them show things like I have found....they appear and feel too man made to be natural formations, yet they don't match up with most relic book photos.

Wanted to post this photo to see what experienced members might think about them.
Any posts/help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Doug

I think they are probably just naturally worn rocks. Mother nature has a way of freezing, breaking, tumbling down creeks rivers etc etc. She (mother nature)makes some pretty interesting stuff sometimes. I really don't see anything that's a true artifact. Sorry :-\ :-\ I remember starting out, I hauled all kinds of goefacts home with me, and it took courage to put them on a board, and hurt to be told they were nothing LOL. I have learned a lot from forums like these, and still learning..That's just one guys opinion tho. John P.s Welcome to the forum

John,

Thanks! I appreciate your opinion and am not afraid to ask questions as that is how to learn more about what to look for and what not to pick up.

That is why I posted here because I wasn't sure if they could be the more primitive pieces. I did find some pieces in a different location that I was sure about though....here's a photo of them:

Thanks for your help,
Doug

Welcome Dabeal, that last group is 'very impressive'.
I have a large bowl from the Modoc country.
Fossis............

I agree with John on the first set of rocks...geofacts. I grew up in upstate NY and found alot of the same type around Lake Ontario...Super finds in the second pic...
Welcome to the Net..

Thanks for the comments everyone.....This is a great website, I am so glad to have found it!!

Happy Holidays to all of you,

Doug

Dabeel, your first picture contains nothing but naturally formed rocks just like the others have stated. Your second picture is something else entirely. Those are some very fine examples of California type Plummets and Charmstones. Very nice artifacts.

I agree with everyone on the first pic, but that second pic :o Awesome examples of plummets and sinkers. BTW welcome to the site!

Thanks again for all the helpful comments.....I confess I had to look up geofacts on wikipedia.....glad to know that I'm not the only one who mistaked them for artifacts, apparently from the articles on geofacts it's a common mistake for beginners to make and I'm glad that there are members on here that could confirm it for me.

Thanks also for the comments on the plummets/charmstones.....at least when I found them I knew I had something nice!

Look forward to posting more on here.....I am going to post a photo of my best find under a new heading..
it's a large obsidian point found sticking out of the river bank near Live Oak, CA

Doug

Welcome Doug, look forwards to seeing more of your finds.

Molly.
