It does indeed look like a scabbard chape. The shape seems to indicate that it is for a straight blade, such as the model 1860 officer’s sword or a GAR, Masons or other lodge sword.

Well I agree it's a scabbard chape, but can't help much more. It does have similarity to the GAR sword below (sorry about the small picture and you will need to heavily zoom in). Those swords were made principally by G.W. Simmons & Co. of Boston, but I don't think the chape design is unique to such swords.

I found this today in MA. I know it is the tip of a scabbard but google image search is no help in identifying a possible date or maker. Any thoughts?
