A friend gave me this he found on a strip mine. Any ideas what it is? It's not any type of metal, my MD doesn't pick it up. 20170703_191506.webp20170703_191608.webp20170703_191617.webp20170703_191629.webp

Do a streak test. It's possibly a mineral, IMO.

How do you mean that it's not any type of metal? Organic?

I think he simply meant it wasn't a native metal, such as gold.

It looks alot like slag, how old is the strip mine? If it's an old one they may have been smelting the ore at the site.

I just meant that my Metal detector didn't detect it at all. I had it on discriminate though. I was thinking slag at first but i thought that my detector would have went off and my garrett pro-pointer didn't even go off?

Slag won't always set off your detector. It is the left over from the smelting process, the goal is to smelt out all of the metal in it, so, what is left over is mainly just melted rock. That's why it has a glassy look to it.
