Found this at a site yesterday where we've found a few war of 1812 and civil war buttons. Quick online search seems to give varying opinions so thought i would seek some expert advice here. Backmark is horstman phila. Thanks for any help!HH

Your "Great Seal Of The United States" US Army button has what was called "black finish" on it, so it dates from the World War One era to 1923, when the use of "black" finish" on US Army buttons ended.

Sidenote:
From the World War One era to 1923, US Military regulations required that the "black finish" be applied to those brass buttons by the manufacturer, so that a hidden soldier's location would not be revealed to the enemy by shiny brass buttons.
