Hey y’all l, didn’t plan on posting anything and I apologize for the frequency of posts, but I came upon this point today. Pretty sure it’s a point, but it’s so small and I am generally better with pottery. I was thinking it was either a Madison, Yadkin, or probably not likely a late paleo. Very nice quartz. It might be fluted, but it is kinda hard to tell. Also can’t tell if there is any basal grinding. So what do y’all think l, is it even a point? If so , what type? Or is it identifiable? Any help would be appreciated! Thank you

I find lots of triangles around here, I’d lean towards Madison, just playing the odds a Madison is much more common than a paleo point, and assuming that you’ve found it in the same area you find the pottery

Thanks for the reply. Madison is probably safe. Area it was found in was not my Mississippian site, can’t access that until the fall. I found this one in an eroded section of a field with other stone nearby. Your right, that context is everything with these.

It's beat up pretty badly and looks sheared flat in pic4 but pic3 looks like possibly a Madison base. It's difficult to see the knapping scars on many quartz specimens. That's about all I find here in East Central Alabama, Elmore County.

Edit: After studying this piece more, I think most of the damage is the result of an impact fracture.

When I just saw the picture , I thought , That's the kind of point & material I see in my area of Cobb, Cherokee, Bartow , Fulton , Paulding Counties . NICE FIND .!

That is a nice color of quartz. I would hunt artifacts with a gold pan in my back pack.
