Help with R&A button

I dug this button at an old town dump (1870s) I know the R might be for Rifleman and the A for Artilleryman but I can't find any information on both on the same button, the back has SCOVILL MFG CO WATERBURY, It is about 7/8th inch across. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Help with R&A button

Possibly a Richmond & Allegheny Railroad button, c. 1879-89. By the way...

Re: Help with R&A button

The backmark does look like the variety dated c. 1860's-70's by Tice, and also by McGuinn & Bazelon.

A similar mark but with "Co" rather than "CO" reportedly was used as late as 1920.

Re: Help with R&A button

Thanks for the enfo guys, I have found some CW sheild buttons about five miles up river from this old dump. I found pictures of them on the net said to be in the 1860's but I've never seen any pictures of this one. again Thanks for all the help.
