It is legal to search for coins and jewels on public lands and on private lands with the owners permission. Good luck and good hunting.

Collecting Native American artifacts on public land is restricted in many areas. Each agency has it's own set of guidelines, which usually can be found on their websites. Private land, it's up to the owners. This is also true of metal detecting, although if the public land area in question is not considered a historically significant spot, fire up the detector. Casual collecting of rock specimens is normally allowed on public land. Entrances to important federal or state sites will usually have signage, informing you of what you may or may not do. Good luck.
 

I'm not sure of the laws in India regarding the serching of Rupees and other coins. But I'm pretty sure removing rubies from the eyes of idols is a bit of a risk.
