I`m new to the hobby of MD and i hit a site that was supposed to be a homestead from 1914.Upon arriving at the site and looking it over i came to the conclusion it was a dump site. Now what i need help with is there are glass bottles all over the place and some look real old.How do i know which ones are worth picking up and which ones are junk?So in learning one hobby i think i make have found a new one lol.Is there any web sites that list bottles or is it a grab all you can carry and see if you can find some info on it or what? How do i get started?thanks Sandrailer. Here is a pic of 4 bottles i pulled out for the hike back to the car.

Hey Sandrrailer...

Those bottles that you have posted in the photo are indeed from the early 1900's... the "screw Cap" bottles didn't come into common use until after the invention of the "Bottle making machine" These machines were initially developed in the late 1890's and didn't come into wide use until after 1900.

In order to learn about the bottle collecting hobby, it is best to invest a little time and money into some of the books on bottle collecting, prices etc. Knowledge is king, not only in the metal detecting hobby, but more so in the bottle collecting hobby. Books by Polack, Cleaveland, Kovel have a lot of photos, descriptions and general value of collectable bottles. The books are generally broken down into sections on bottles that were used for specific purposes such as medicines, beers, sodas, cures, whiskey, gins, black glass, inks, poisons, milk, household, flasks and so on. ;)

I've been bottle hunting for several years now and I have found all that I collect underwater. I have a nice little collection, but there are some others who have invested thousands upon thousands of dollars in their collections. It's pretty amazing. Bottle hunting, digging, diving, collecting is like a disease!!! Once you are hooked, it's hard to cure.... ;D

There is a great bottle collecting forum on line (to which I am a member) and anyone can join. It is very similar to the Treasurenet Forum, but a lot smaller. Here is the address: Antique-Bottles.net This forum is a great place for info on specific bottles, bottle hunting, digging and collecting. Take a look at it.

Sand,

your bottles do not look that old.

But.......................

I have often come across a dump like you
describe and got some fine old bottles from
it.

Often once a dump is started it just gets more
and more items.

The farmer who started it. After he leaves the
next person or locals bring their trash out. "Stuff
on top is new, older stuff under it.

I dig down under the common trash and often
find a few nice ones. Dig down until you stop
finding shards. Have often gone down into dirt
12-18 inches, keep going until nothing is found.

Give it a try ;D

have a good un............
