I found this today sitting at the top of a bluff along the James river near Jamestown. It seems like a tool that some hunter used just a bit while they were in town hunting for the summer? What think? 20191001_195900.webp

That is a piece of quartz it looks like--very hard. I'd have to go with natural. If it were an abrader, I'd expect to see back and forth "sawing" evidence in that groove.
 

Okay, that is good knowledge! Do you know why the groove is there? Cause I don't. And yes it is a dense quartz, there is a ton of fragile quartz here but when I see this I pick it up!

The groove is there because a softer stone or a fossil was in it's place, just like the other dents an marks on it. Good eye to spot that. Happy hunting!!!!!
