Here's a little collection I found a while back

A couple years ago I was gutting a house for a friend here in New Orleans, that had sat untouched since the storm. Generally just a dirty job, and pretty boring until I pulled the ceiling down in a back room and all this came spilling out. I spent the rest of the day separating coins from plaster dust and insulation, and really didn't get much else done. We just recently found a collector and sold the collection (minus a couple pieces) and split the funds, but it's still the most incredible find I've ever had, and definitely a day I'll never forget.

I wish I had taken more pics, there was also a huge pile of war nickels, buffalo nickels, wheats, indian cents, silver rosies, a few barber dimes and several v nickels as well. And Brian, I think my face was sore for days from that smile!

I've actually tracked down the former owner, I found some photos and post cards dating to ww2 in the attic as well. He passed in the late 70's and from what we've learned the house sat empty since then. My friend bought it at a tax sale and as far as he could find there were no living family.

Re: Here's a little collection I found a while back

That's weird...My 2011 Bluebook for coins says the only mint marks for the 1861 gold dollar are "plain" and "D", no "O"...

RelicHunter97,

You're right, I was thinking of one of the half dimes that had the O mint mark. I guess my memory isn't what it used to be. :dontknow: The gold dollar was plain.

Too bad, could have been worth $20,000+ :-\

Re: Here's a little collection I found a while back

Ouch! that would have been nice. The 1838 O with no stars half dime did bring a pretty penny though.

Maybe I should go check his yard, just in case there's another collection buried out there.
