Sorry about the heading . I was curious about the small holes in it. Had a whole lot more knowledgeable guy check it out, told me it had been hot. So I think campfire. Got the sifter an shovel found several more. A little advice from a nonexpert.

We call it a timber rattler. Very docile snake .
