Re: Here's some of my stepbrothers collection

Are you saying that the Flint Effigies are personal field finds too? Those are the most common type of fakes on the market today and I would be hard pressed to believe they are legit. The rest look very good, but I never trust those types of Effigy pieces.

said he found all but the 5 small points in the center of the 1'st photo.

 Nice thanks for sharing. Looks like some nice ones in there.

Re: Here's some of my stepbrothers collection

Unless the eccentrics were from another culture then they really were not that uncommon..

Concur... although the red, multi-notched "eccentric" at the 9 o'clock position is probably good (but probably from TN), the other two white flint "eccentrics" or "effigies" (claw, lizard, etc.) are classic flea market fare. It's a shame because it looks like otherwise there are some very nice points in the frames.

so targe; what are you saying; that he got them at a flea market; if so you are bad wrong; he is 74 years old and been collecting and hunting rocks since he was a teenager and has no reason to lie to me; or anyone else for that matter and if he says he found and picked them up then thats what happened; I respect everyones opion; but it's no shame to him or they would not be there.

Re: Here's some of my stepbrothers collection

daddyrog, no one is questioning whether he actually found them in a field or not, but whether or not they are real, which I doubt. People have been "salting" fields for many, many years and someone could have thrown those into a field for somebody else to find. I have a large point that I found in a field years ago that has since been determined to be a reproduction. It was found in a field close to some houses and could have been lost by kids playing with it in the field or it could have been thrown there by someone trying to get over on an unsuspecting hunter.

Eagles, Turtles, Fish Hooks, Lizards, and several other flint types have been faked for years and there has never been a documented find of one in a mound or grave anywhere in the U.S.A. that I can recall. You would think that if they were real that they would have had some kind of significance to them and would have been buried with the dead.

Sorry if we offended you, but I will never be convinced that one of those types are real. At least not one claimed to be found in a field in our country. The Aztecs and Mayans made all kinds of Effigies and those too have been faked for as long as people have collected them.

Re: Here's some of my stepbrothers collection

The ones I am showing were documented by the Smithsonian so no question to their authenticity. But would love to hear someone say thay are not. :laughing7: Some exotics like targe said,, that red one,, is found in Tn. Not ever by me though.

The rules of treasure net state all items are real unless stated as not so by the finder. We tend to forget that here and we should not.
Healthy discussion is good. I think that just two items in there are unknown. I think the red one is maybe ok though rare. The rest look great. Listen he could have traded or even found those. No one is taking away from the frames they have some really nice pieces in there.
It seem to be easy now days for everyone to get excited when something does just fit. I have found a few things that did not belong as well. What the heck.
Appreciate you sharing and please do not take this the wrong way everyone has enjoyed your finds and the discussion and journey with them. This is just that a learning journey with strong opinions to bounce us along the way.
Cool?? :hello:

Re: Here's some of my stepbrothers collection

I agree and most peple should realise that when they are seeing the best of the best they are most times grave goods. Paleo being the exception. No doubt about that. You do not find pots lying in a field much. And a kill hole was probably a probe. Wether you dig a trash pit shell midden with burials or mounds or find them washed out in water. Especially large caches of blades and beads. We need not kid ourselves when you buy artifacts of that quality.
Those exotics are outside the smithsonian in a much larger collection. Not in a musuem. The finest flint workmanship/collection thay said they has ever seen.
It was dug I am sure in another country.
