Here's why I hate these things.....

They look SOOOO good in the hole, then you pop it out with thoughts of BIG SILVER in your head only to get yet another Mardi Gras dubloon.... RATS!

100_2773.webpSee the nice shiny round edge there?
100_2777.webpYup, another one of those darn dubloons....

Got a few keepers though, I'll post those in a bit.

Still a cool find though. I suppose some are rarer than other ones?

Some of the really old ones in good condition are collectable I should probably look through all of mine and see if any of them are worth more than a buck or two. They're always a neat find for visitors though since I'd think you really wouldn't find too many of them outside of Louisiana, but after you dig a few hundred of them...... I only keep the ones in good shape, the rest go to the recyclers.

I had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago. It turned out to be a Popeyes chicken token.

I think it is a good find! Congratulations.

Hey NOLA Ken, A friend of mine here in Lafayette was digging those and shot gun nickels all day on a plantation property. He says, he was about to quit and got a good signal, which the dubloons give. He decided to dig one more and when he got it out of the ground, he thought at first it was another dubloon, but then noticed the weight difference. It was a spanish 1850, 1 oz coin. KEEP DIGGING is the moral of that story. :laughing7:

Who knows who's chest it was on.. Only if it could talk. :laughing7:

You may someday see a shiny edge and think 'Oh another one of those', then get a real surprise :laughing7:

Oh, I'll keep digging every one, I figure sooner or later I'll get a nice surprise.

I found a Nagano Olympics aluminum token a couple of months ago... silver dollar size with reeded edge. When I first saw it in the hole, my eyes got really big, then I grabbed it only to realize that it was light as feather...

I guess so man, that would get me for sure.Gotta take it for what it is thow,"A quick rush" Them stainless steel washers are what gets me all the time, look just like a big silver coin turning up.Of course I would prefer that over a washer anyday, then again I have never found one of those, might give me a short heart attack.

They do get your heart racing when you see a shiny receded edge poking through the dirt. Most of the ones I pull out of the ground on the North Shore are ate up and hard to read. I really don't like them, but I keep diggin them too.

I have only found 2 of them in the Raleigh, NC area.

Most of them I find are pretty rotten too, but that occasional shiny one gets me every time....

I know what ya mean, ken. I live on the metairie parade route and have a huge bucket of them. They fool me every time

Would be cool to find all different Krewes

especially the early years when they used real Metals .

trying to dig all Krewes from all years would be impossible but fun

I have dug a couple, and yes, they will make your heart skip a beat when they are still in the ground. At least yours look to be metal, mine have both been plastic.
