What do you think? Out of Place?

Went to check out a nearby estate auction yesterday. I really didn't plan on attending, I just wanted to scope it out. Turned out the farmer had a frame of 9 points that he had found over the years, mostly small beat up pieces glued into a shadow box. AND there was this! Well, that meant I was staying. 6 hours later I owned it.

Opening day of Pheasant season kept some of the competition that I know away, and fortunately there was nobody there with any real interest in these artifacts, so it went pretty well for me. :-) I visited with the retiring farmer that found it for a while, he never really hunted for them, just picked them up when he stumbled into them. He pointed toward the west, and said he found it just a few rods out in the field. This was about one mile from the Big Sioux River.

I've only had one st charlsey looking piece in the past from our area, it was KRF as well, but much smaller, a collector in Mt Pleasant owns that one now.

It's 4 1/4", and made of Knife River Flint.

First one you've seen as in from here? the material? Both?

First on both accounts, but I haven't really spent much time looking at Doves out that way. I've seen plenty from Iowa, but usually the eastern side, not the western side. I've seen plenty made of Hixton, so I'm sure the makers got around.

There are some other points that look like Dovetails, but the notches are pressure flaked along the edges. Your piece has that classic notching for the type (not much flaking, just a couple of round, punch scars.)

So do you get to hunt where it was found? It's brother is probably waiting for you to pick it up.

that may be a challenge. I heard he donated the land to augustana college, but I will be checking. If their archy gets wind of this it will be impossible I'd bet.

Thanks Pickaway. This is the complete frame as it was.

Nice addition to your collection. Congratulations on the get!

Thanks neighbor!

Getting things back in order after that terrible blizzard a couple weeks ago?

Now that's a really cool piece! I dont know that I've ever seen an authentic KRF dove before? They usually run out by the middle of Iowa and I dont see them much farther west. I dont recall seeing too many from Minnesota either. I would love to see it in person some time!

Sorry about the slow reply. I haven't been on the computer much in the past couple of weeks. Lots of traveling back and forth.

Thanks for the pic. That's a great piece.

Good to see you are still kicking Hippy!

This one IS authentic, and I'm looking forward to showing you, I know you are fond of the type. I don't suppose you will be back in time for the Mt. Pleasant show?

Incredible piece Joel, so glad to see something like that still intact.
One of the finest I've seen here.
Eastern Iowa hasn't coughed up anything like that for me lately...lol.
Congrats

Yep, no question about that one being the real deal. I suppose if you see a few scotties in Western Illinois it's not too strange that you could see a dove in the Dakotas...although I've never seen one before.

I don't think I'll be able to get to Mt. Pleasant this year, but do plan on getting to Collinsville. Even if I have to fly back for the show I plan on doing it. Are you going to shoot for Collinsville this year?

I was back last week for my wedding and honeymoon...and I might have snuck in a rock show before I headed back. The good news is I found a piece I couldn't leave there. It's about 6-3/16" of Hixton goodness from Jackson County, Wisconsin. Probably the best known Hixton dove and likely the best dove known to have been found in Wisconsin. Needless to say, it was a real good trip to the show for me! :hello2:

That's one you won't find every day or every year.

That's quite an aquisition Jeff! And and Incredible serious piece of Hixton there too! Congratulations on both new additions!!!

I am shooting for C-ville again. Hope you do get back for it too. I get an e-mail from your dad once in a while, good to see he is still getting out and finding a few!

Keep checking in, some of us like your input.

Joel
