Found fairly deep on a California beach where there used to be a 19th century whaling campsite...

Non magnetic.... heavy in the hand.... believed to be lead....

Think it might be a part of a whale that was made by a iron smith and used as a signature for that particular camp. Just one of the many whale camps. This particular piece could of been one of the whales teeth in the entrance of this one camp.

Possibly the sprue that was removed from a lead object after it came out of the mold?

its some sort of spill or over cast. The dent was probably in the surface it spilled onto, the flat back is the portion that was facing up when it was spilled. If by very small chance it was purposefully cast, it was never worked on any further and has no obvious use. I see this type of thing all the time at our metal foundry.
